Why use Sun Protective Clothing?
Although sunscreens help reduce the amount of ultraviolet induced skin damage, skin can still burn and tan with sunscreen use. As a practical matter, sunscreens are wiped off or come off with swimming and sweating. Clothing adds a layer of protection from damaging sun rays, but most regular clothing is limited in the amount of ultraviolet that is blocked.
Regular t-shirts for example, may have a very low Sun Protection Factor–and this protection is decreased as the clothing gets wet from swimming or perspiration.
As a guideline, darker clothing, and fabrics with a tighter weave offer more protection.
Although light colored clothing may feel cool, it is the darker colors that are more sun protective.
Sun protective clothing may be purchased on line, or from a variety of sporting goods and outdoor clothing manufacturers. Directory of Sun Protective Clothing and Sun Protectection Products
