How much sunscreen should you apply?
Dermatologists usually suggest it takes about 2 tablespoons of your sunscreen skin care product to be effective.
Most of us have sunscreen leftover from previous seasons in our medicine cabinet.
If we are using the sunscreen appropriately, the bottle should be used up fairly quickly.
Editor’s note: A famous dermatologist once said that Americans apply sunscreen like perfume–they dab it on instead of applying the sunscreen generously to all exposed body surfaces. It’s best to apply the sunscreen about 1/2 hour before exposure—and to re-apply after sweating or swimming.
Remember the sunscreen that stays in the bottle is not protecting your skin!
Why are Sunscreens Important?
Excessive sunlight exposure acts as a carcinogen, by damaging the DNA of skin cells and slowing down the repair mechanisms.
Sunburns and sun damage are associated with higher rates of skin cancer.
The highest rates of skin cancer occur among ligher complexion individuals, who live in Southern latitudes such as Phoenix and Australia,
but skin cancer is not confined to those groups.
We know that protection from the sun decreases the rates of the most common skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Regular sun protection, especially early in life, may decrease the number of these cancers as well as the precancerous growths called actinic keratosis.
It is especially important to protect children from too much sun.
Many dermatologists believes that sunburns and excessive sun exposure before age 20 significantly raises the risk of skin cancer later in life. Protect your children from the sun
